Rare games for download

Posted by Gimmick - November 30th, 2013

When people say the phrase "rare games", some of them may think about things like cartridges containing games that were not mass-produced, or CDs or thumbsticks containing them. They may or may not be right, but I'm not talking about those types of games here.

I'm talking about games available on the internet for download. Those that were free from the beginning, or have turned from pay-to-download to abandonware (the companies that made these are either not functioning anymore, or are not offering these for sale, AFAIK)

That said, it turns out that I received these games through some odd occurrence, by either getting a CD of it a long, long time ago, or I downloaded it a long, long time ago (and then lost it, and then hunted for it and eventually found it - but now it is not available)

1) Contraption (Eclectic Entertainment) (Ben Retan)

This is a simple (?) game where you have to roll the ball into a box using ramps, accelerators, funnels and PHYSICS! The original site for download can be found here. The website that you are lead to is no longer functioning, and redirects to the same page. No searches for "contraption ben retan" give a download; by luck, I found this setup existing on my computer. (Originally Free)

Edit: Now the download is through 4shared; no need for torrent/fileshare software.

I thought this was gonna be about the games made by Rareware. I is disappoint.

I'm kinda suspicious of a torrent that doesn't show up in search results under its right name (searching for Contraption doesn't give anything). :/ It sounds like fun though, guess I'll download and give it a shot! As for direct downloads, how about mega.co.nz?

I've tried mega, it just freezes at the homepage.
Maybe 4shared will work better.

Been attempting to download this since yesterday btw, so far I'm at... 0%... timezones are a bother. :/

Updated. No need for torrents anymore.

Nice. :) How about mediafire? That and Mega are the only ones I know of without waiting restrictions. Bit annoying you need to register or share social details to download a file through 4shared...

Ah, forgot about those.

Have you played through any of these??
-Illusion of Time/Gaya (SNES)
-Indianna Jones & the fate of Atlantis
-The Dig
-Indianna Jones & the Last Emperor's Tomb (PC)

No not really :\

I thought the same thing Atlas did, I'm kind of disappointed. Well well, moop moop, weep weep, cut cut.

Wow, can't believe you found this old game of mine. Very cool. Glad you liked it!

Omg I can't believe it! Ben Retan!! <333

IKR, I still can't believe I found it. (I had found it somewhere around 2011 or 12 if my file dates were accurate, and then accidentally deleted the folders containing it. I was kicking myself for doing that, and I found the setup file in USB I'd copied to as a backup. Phew! Finding it again on the net was not an easy task -- the original website and the /contraption page were redirecting to the most recent versions so the Wayback archive didn't work at all, sadly. Thanks to whoever uploaded it originally! Hopefully similar stuff won't get buried in time and lost almost forever)

I loved the music in contraption! Too bad the game was rather short. What happened the team that made Contraption, btw?

(As a side note, on your website/blog post about Contraption it links to http://benretan.com/contraption but it just redirects to the blog post again, could you please update it / put up a download link? I don't know how long these links will last)

@Cyberdevil damn near 9 years on and (predictably?) the 4shared link has poofed out of existence. I don't even know if I can recover the file because it straight up claims the account does not exist. Do you perchance happen to have the original file? It's unlikely but I figure I might as well ask before digging through older archives fruitlessly.

(as for the comment below by benretan, I was 99.9% sure that was someone's alt posing as the user, but I didn't want to be a jerk and call it out on the off chance it really was him. Turns out it really was an alt lmao)

Ah that's a bummer! I'm not sure I remember this, I probably did download it but no idea if I actually played it or saved it... I've been pretty good at storing and backing things up the last decade or so, but with games specifically I unfortunately cloned a drive I was attempting to backup in the wrong direction (cloned the empty drive onto the full one) and thus irrevocably cleared out my whole collection...

So no, I don't think I have a copy of this specifically. Hope you still do...

(shouldn't have gone digging hmm, would've been cool if it was real :)
